Los efectos del capital social sobre la participación política en México

Abstract

Existen muchos textos sobre participación. sobre todo electoral, en México. Sin embargo, prácticamente ninguno de esos trabajos incluye el capital social como variable explicativa. Con el fin de abonar a esta tarea, y valiéndome principalmente de la base de datos del Latin American Public Opinión Project 2010 (LAPOP, 2010), el objetivo central de este artículo es estudiar la relación entre las diversas dimensiones del capital social y la participación política electoral y no electoral en México. El análisis que presento en este trabajo apoya el argumento de que el capital social es un factor que favorece más altos niveles de participación política, hecho que generalmente asociamos con el proceso de fortalecimiento de la democracia. Sin embargo, es importante señalar que las distintas dimensiones del capital social tienen diferentes efectos sobre los tipos de participación. Los resultados de los diversos modelos estadísticos muestran que las variables que ayudan a explicar la participación electoral de los mexicanos no son capaces de hacer lo mismo con otro tipo de actividades políticas.

Many papers have been written on participation, particularly on electoral participation, in Mexico. Nevertheless, almost none of these works include social capital as an explanatory variable. With the objective of contributing to this task, and by relying almost entirely on data from the Latin American Public Opinion Project 2010 (LAPOP, 2010), this article centers on the study of the relationship between the various dimensions of social capital and electoral and non-electoral polítical participation in México. The analysis I submit in this paper supports the argument that social capital is a factor that contributes to greater levels of political participation, which we generally associate with the process of strengthening democracy. Nonetheless, it is important to point out that the various dimensions of social capital have different effects on the types of participation involved. Results obtained through several statistical models show that the variables that help explain Mexican electoral participation cannot be applied to other types of political activities.
