El ambiente amenazado: (tercer capítulo de: el temblor interminable)

Abstract

This essay presents a set of reflections around three issues: Ecology as the “Nova Scientia” that expresses the mounting conflict between wealth and the Environment. A structural turnmoil linked to population growth, increased material well-being and rising amounts of fossil fuel burning. A growing population and the pursuit of wealth impose an unprecedented human pressure on the Earth ecosystems, with dangerous changes in gas equilibrium of the atmosphere, global climate and other major ecosystems. There is no certainty that future scientific innovations will be able to offset the potential irreversible consequences of population growth and the persistent link between energy and fossil fuel. The seventh cavalry of science might not arrive on time to avoid serious environmental global roughness in the near future. Social innovations have become, along with science, a tool of survival.

Este ensayo presenta algunas reflexiones alrededor de tres temas: La Ecología como la “Nova Scientia” que expresa el conflicto creciente entre la Riqueza y el Medio ambiente. Un tumulto estructural asociado al aumento de la población, la ampliación del bienestar material y la combustión de crecientes cantidades de combustible fósil. Una población en crecimiento y la búsqueda de la riqueza imponen una presión humana sin precedentes sobre los ecosistemas de la Tierra, con cambios peligrosos en el equilibrio de gases de la atmósfera, en el clima global y en otros importantes ecosistemas. No hay certeza en que futuras innovaciones científicas sean capaces de contrarrestar las consecuencias del crecimiento en la población y del vínculo persistente entre energía y combustibles fósiles. El Séptimo de la Caballería de la ciencia podría no llegar a tiempo para evitar serias turbulencias ambientales en el futuro próximo. Las innovaciones sociales, junto con la ciencia, se han vuelto una herramienta de sobrevivencia.
