La industria de cine en México tras la pandemia: entre el terror y el suspenso

Abstract

La pandemia aceleró un proceso y modificó drásticamente dinámicas y hábitos de consumo y modelos de negocio relacionados al cine en todas las etapas de la cadena de dicha industria. Este reportaje señala algunos de los momentos más significativos y detalla una selección de historias representativas de lo enfrentado en México en estos 15 meses y el escenario en el que se encuentra la industria nacional, entre el terror de los retos y el suspenso de las oportunidades. Busca ser una radiografía amplia y un registro histórico considerando a todos los protagonistas actuales de un momento exacto y muy especial de la industria por la suma de circunstancias excepcionales y de incertidumbres. Esto desde la perspectiva de sus distintos jugadores hacia el futuro, coincidiendo con la reactivación de la exhibición comercial ya con nuevas reglas y dinámicas, y agregando para México la aparición de nuevas y polémicas políticas públicas al respecto. La investigación cuenta con entrevistas a productores, directivos y ejecutivos de estudios, plataformas de streaming, distribuidoras y proyectos de exhibición (cadenas comerciales y cines independientes), de diversos tamaños y perfiles en cada parte de la cadena, así como con representantes de Imcine y Canacine. Estas historias y perspectivas se complementan con investigación académica, bibliográfica y periodística sobre la industria y los varios fenómenos que se mezclan en esta nueva adaptación de la industria cinematográfica, como desarrollos tecnológicos y hábitos y tendencias de consumo.

The pandemic accelerated a process and drastically modified the dynamics and habits of consumption and business models related to films at all stages of the chain of said industry. This report points out some of the most significant moments and details a selection of representative stories of what Mexico has faced in these 15 months and the scenario in which the national industry finds itself, amidst the terror of challenges and the suspense of opportunities. It seeks to be a broad X-ray and a historical record considering all the current protagonists of a very special moment in the industry due to the sum of exceptional circumstances and uncertainties. This from the perspective of its different players, towards the future, coinciding with the reactivation of the commercial exhibition already with new rules and dynamics and adding for Mexico the appearance of new and controversial public policies. The investigation includes interviews with producers, managers and executives of studios, streaming platforms, distributors and exhibition projects (commercial chains and independent cinemas), of different sizes and profiles in each part of the chain, as well as with representatives of Imcine and Canacine. These stories and perspectives are complemented by academic, bibliographic, and journalistic research on the industry and the various phenomena that are mixed in this new adaptation of the film industry, such as technological developments and consumer habits and trends.
