Infraestructura y cobertura universal en salud

Abstract

En este documento analizamos la infraestructura y los recursos humanos existentes (hospitales, camas, quirófanos, médicos y enfermeras, entre otros), tanto en el sector público como en el privado, para determinar la capacidad que existe en el país para satisfacer la demanda potencial que enfrentará al darse la cobertura universal. El escenario más factible implica grandes retos en materia de crecimiento de la infraestructura requerida. Se necesitarán 160,000 camas adicionales, 202,000 nuevas enfermeras, inversiones importantes en tecnología médica (a título de ejemplo, 136 unidades de radioterapia) respecto a la situación al cierre de 2008. Además, estos recursos deberán estar distribuidos de forma equitativa a nivel regional.

In this document we analyze the infrastructure and human resources (hospitals, beds, ORs, doctors and nurses, among others), both in the public and the private sector, to determine the installed capacity in the country to meet the potential demand that will be faced in case of universal coverage. The more feasible scenario implies great challenges in terms of growth of the required infrastructure. There will be needed 160,000 additional beds, 202,000 new nurses, investment in medical technology (for example, 136 units of radiotherapy) with respect to the infrastructure at the end of 2008. Furthermore, these resources must be fairly distributed at the regional level.
